revolutionary figure
Upheaval's leading actor
A revolutionary figure is a person who plays a central role in bringing about radical political or social change, often through leading or symbolizing a movement that overturns an existing order.
The term applies to leaders of political revolutions—Lenin was the revolutionary figure of 1917 Russia—but extends to anyone whose influence fundamentally transforms a field or society: Darwin remains a revolutionary figure in biology.
