respiratory cycle
One complete breath
A respiratory cycle is one complete sequence of breathing in and breathing out.
The cycle begins with inhalation, when the diaphragm contracts and the lungs fill with air, and ends with exhalation, when the diaphragm relaxes and air is expelled.
At rest, a human completes about 12 to 20 respiratory cycles per minute.
