Regional sports are athletic competitions or leagues with followings concentrated in specific geographic areas rather than national or international audiences.
Some sports dominate particular regions—cricket in South Asia, hurling in Ireland, lacrosse in the American Northeast.
The term also applies to local leagues and teams that haven't achieved broader recognition: He covers regional sports for the newspaper.
