regional games
Area athletic events
Regional games are athletic competitions limited to participants from a specific geographic area, smaller than global but larger than local.
The term often refers to multi-sport events modeled on the Olympics but restricted by region: the Pan American Games, the Asian Games, the Mediterranean Games.
These serve as stepping stones to international competition and foster regional identity through sport.
