reef knots
Square fastening loops
A reef knot is a simple binding knot formed by tying two ends of the same rope—right over left, then left over right—so the knot lies flat.
Sailors use it to secure a reefed sail, hence the name.
Also called a square knot.
It's reliable for bundling but unsuitable for joining two separate ropes, as it can slip or capsize under strain.
