red cards
Referee's expulsion signals
Red cards are penalties issued by referees in soccer and some other sports, ejecting a player from the game for serious fouls or misconduct.
A player who receives a red card must leave the field immediately and cannot be replaced: He got a red card for that tackle.
Two yellow cards in the same match trigger an automatic red card.
The term extends figuratively to any decisive rejection or disqualification.
