ream out

Harshly dress down

Ream out has two meanings.

Literally, to ream out is to enlarge or clean a hole using a rotating tool called a reamer: The mechanic reamed out the cylinder bore.

Figuratively, to ream someone out is to scold them harshly: The coach reamed out the players after the loss.

Both senses involve forceful, thorough action on an interior space.
