random encounter

A random encounter is an unplanned meeting or confrontation, especially in video games where enemies or events appear based on chance rather than fixed placement.

Players wandering through an area might trigger a random encounter that interrupts exploration with combat.

The term extends beyond gaming to any unexpected meeting: I had a random encounter with my ex at the grocery store.
