rainbow effect

Light spectrum phenomenon

Rainbow effect describes an unwanted visual artifact where colors separate or shimmer inappropriately.

In displays—particularly older DLP projectors—viewers may perceive brief flashes of red, green, and blue, especially during quick eye movements or in high-contrast scenes.

The term also applies to color banding in compressed images or the prismatic distortion seen through certain lenses.

Some people are more sensitive to the rainbow effect than others.
