rain cheque

Promise for later

A rain cheque (also rain check) is a voucher entitling someone to receive goods or services at a later date when they're unavailable now—originally a ticket stub allowing readmission to a baseball game postponed by rain.

The phrase extends to any deferred acceptance: Can I take a rain cheque on dinner? means declining now with intent to accept later.
