puppy raisers
Young canine caretakers
Puppy raisers are volunteers who care for service dogs during their first year or so of life, socializing them and teaching basic obedience before the dogs return to training organizations for specialized instruction.
The role requires commitment knowing the puppy will eventually leave: Our family has been puppy raisers for guide dogs for years.
