punt formation

Fourth-down arrangement

A punt formation is an offensive alignment in American football used when a team intends to kick the ball to the opposing team, typically on fourth down.

The punter stands about fifteen yards behind the line of scrimmage, with blockers positioned to protect against the rush: They lined up in punt formation with two minutes left.

Teams occasionally run or pass out of punt formation to surprise the defense.
