pulp hero

Magazine adventure star

A pulp hero is a protagonist from the cheap fiction magazines of the early twentieth century—so named for the rough wood-pulp paper they were printed on.

These characters tend toward larger-than-life abilities and clear moral purpose: Doc Savage, The Shadow, Zorro.

The term now describes any hero in that swashbuckling, melodramatic mold, whether in fiction, film, or comics.
