primary voter
Party election participant
A primary voter is someone who participates in a primary election—the preliminary contest where political parties select their candidates for the general election.
Primary voters tend to be more partisan and politically engaged than the broader electorate: Primary voters in both parties have pushed candidates toward the extremes.
In states with closed primaries, only registered party members can vote; open primaries allow any registered voter to participate.
