crossover voter
Defects at polls
A crossover voter is someone who votes for a candidate from a different party than their usual affiliation, particularly in primary elections.
In states with open primaries, registered Democrats might vote in Republican primaries or vice versa: Crossover voters helped the moderate candidate win the primary.
The term sometimes carries suspicion that voters are strategically choosing weaker opponents rather than genuinely supporting candidates.
