prewashing

First cleaning cycle

Prewashing is a preliminary wash before the main wash cycle—whether for laundry, dishes, or produce.

The term appears in care instructions for fabrics that might shrink or bleed: Prewashing the fabric prevents surprises after you've sewn the garment.

In dishwashers, prewashing removes heavy soil before the full cycle.
