presidential succession
Executive replacement order
Presidential succession is the order in which officials assume the presidency when the office becomes vacant through death, resignation, removal, or incapacity.
In the United States, the vice president is first in line, followed by the Speaker of the House and President pro tempore of the Senate, then cabinet members in order of their departments' creation.
The assassination raised urgent questions about presidential succession.
