pre-reading

Early literacy stage

Pre-reading refers to activities done before reading a text to improve comprehension—scanning headings, reviewing vocabulary, or activating prior knowledge: The teacher assigned pre-reading questions about the Civil War.

In education, pre-reading also describes the developmental stage before a child can read, or skills that prepare them for it: pre-reading activities for preschoolers.
