powder burn
Close-range evidence
A powder burn is a skin injury caused by the discharge of a firearm at close range, where burning gunpowder residue contacts the flesh.
Forensic investigators examine powder burns to estimate the distance between gun and victim: The powder burns indicated the shot was fired from less than two feet away.
The term also applies to burns from fireworks or explosives.
