potato battery
Spud power source
A potato battery is a simple electrochemical cell that generates electricity using a potato as the electrolyte.
Two different metal electrodes—typically zinc and copper—are inserted into the potato, and the acid in the potato flesh facilitates a chemical reaction that produces a small voltage.
Potato batteries are common science fair projects demonstrating basic principles of electricity: We powered an LED with a potato battery.
