pole barns
Post-supported agricultural buildings
Pole barns are agricultural or utility buildings constructed with poles or posts set directly into the ground as the main structural support, rather than using a conventional foundation.
The method is simpler and cheaper than traditional framing, making pole barns popular for storing equipment, housing livestock, or sheltering hay.
The term now covers any large, open-span building using this post-frame construction: They converted an old pole barn into a workshop.
