pistol duel
Ten paces, fire
A pistol duel is a formal combat between two people using handguns, following established rules—typically measured paces, turned backs, and simultaneous shots at a signal.
Once a legitimate method for settling disputes of honor among gentlemen, the practice declined through the 19th century and is now illegal everywhere.
Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a pistol duel in 1804.
