dueled

Settled with pistols

Dueled is the past tense of duel—to fight a formal combat between two people, traditionally with swords or pistols to settle a point of honor: They dueled at dawn.

The word extends to any intense one-on-one contest: The two guitarists dueled for twenty minutes.
