photographic negative
Light-dark reversed image
A photographic negative is an image on film or glass where light and dark areas are reversed—bright subjects appear dark, dark subjects appear light.
In color negatives, colors also appear as their complements.
Negatives serve as masters from which positive prints are made: She kept the negatives in case she wanted reprints.
Digital photography has largely displaced this technology.
