phantom sensations
Feelings without source
Phantom sensations are feelings perceived in a body part that no longer exists, most commonly after amputation.
An amputee might feel itching, pressure, or pain in a missing limb.
The brain continues to expect input from nerves that once served that area: He still felt his toes curl, though the foot had been gone for years.
The term extends to any sensation without a physical source.
