period of time

Duration of something

A period of time is a duration with boundaries—a stretch between two points.

The phrase is often redundant, since period alone conveys the same meaning: a period of uncertainty works as well as a period of time of uncertainty.

Still, the fuller phrase appears frequently when emphasizing duration itself: We'll need a period of time to adjust.
