pen cap

Ballpoint's little hat

A pen cap is the removable cover that fits over the writing tip of a pen, protecting it from drying out or marking surfaces.

Most caps snap or screw onto the pen body and often include a clip for attaching to a pocket: I lost the pen cap and now it's dried out.

Chewing on pen caps is a common nervous habit.
