pay walls
Content access barriers
Pay walls are barriers that restrict access to online content until payment is made.
News sites, academic journals, and streaming services use pay walls to monetize their content: The article looked promising, but I hit a pay wall.
A hard pay wall blocks all access; a soft pay wall allows limited free articles before requiring subscription.
Also spelled as one word: paywall.
