paint sample
Hue test square
A paint sample is a small quantity of paint, typically on a card or chip, used to preview how a color will look before committing to a full purchase.
Hardware stores display hundreds of these for customers to take home and compare against walls, furniture, or lighting.
The term extends to small containers of paint for testing on actual surfaces: We bought three paint samples before deciding on the blue.
