pachinko machine
Ball-bouncing gambling device
A pachinko machine is a Japanese mechanical gambling device, resembling a vertical pinball machine.
Players launch small steel balls that cascade through a field of pins and obstacles; balls landing in certain pockets trigger payouts of more balls, which can be exchanged for prizes or cash.
Pachinko parlors are ubiquitous in Japan, operating in a legal gray area since direct cash gambling is technically prohibited.
The noise of a thousand pachinko machines filled the arcade.
