overcounting

Adding too many

Overcounting is counting something more than once, inflating the total beyond the true number.

In mathematics and statistics, overcounting is a common error when calculating combinations or probabilities: The formula overcounts arrangements that are actually identical.

More broadly, it describes any methodology that produces artificially high figures: Critics accused the study of overcounting by including duplicate records.
