overcleaning

Scrubbing beyond necessity

Overcleaning is cleaning too much or too thoroughly, to the point of diminishing returns or actual harm.

Excessive cleaning can damage surfaces, strip protective finishes, or irritate skin: Overcleaning your face can make acne worse.

The concept also appears in debates about hygiene—some argue that overcleaning environments, especially for children, weakens immune systems by limiting exposure to beneficial microbes.
