on the wind

Drifting through air

On the wind describes something carried by or traveling through moving air.

Sailors use it technically for a direction relative to the wind: sailing close on the wind.

More commonly it suggests something sensed faintly or approaching from a distance: There's change on the wind.

A scent or sound arrives on the wind when air currents bring it: The smell of smoke came on the wind.
