on-hook

Phone not active

On-hook describes a telephone handset resting in its cradle, disconnecting the line—the default state when not in use.

The term comes from early phones where the earpiece literally hung on a hook.

In telecommunications, on-hook signals that a line is available: The system detects when the phone goes on-hook.

Opposite of off-hook.
