off-Broadway

Alternative New York stage

Off-Broadway refers to professional theater productions in New York City staged in smaller venues than the major Broadway houses, typically seating 100 to 499 people.

These productions often feature experimental or less commercially driven work: The play had a successful off-Broadway run before moving to a larger theater.

The term also functions as an adjective or adverb describing this category of theater: an off-Broadway production, The show opened off-Broadway. (Capitalized Off-Broadway is an alternate styling.)
