obstetric forceps
Birth-assisting grippers
Obstetric forceps are a hinged instrument resembling large tongs, designed to grasp a baby's head and guide it through the birth canal during difficult deliveries.
The two curved blades lock together and allow the physician to apply traction or rotate the baby's position: The doctor reached for the forceps when labor stalled.
Largely supplanted by cesarean sections but still used in some vaginal deliveries.
