number spoofing
Faked caller ID
Number spoofing is disguising the origin of a phone call by falsifying the caller ID information.
Scammers use it to make calls appear to come from trusted sources—banks, government agencies, or local numbers—to increase the likelihood that targets will answer.
The practice is illegal when used with intent to defraud, though legitimate uses exist for businesses displaying a main callback number.
