nonrelationship

Absence of ties

A nonrelationship is the absence of a relationship where one might be expected or desired.

The term often describes romantic situations that never quite become official: We had a six-month nonrelationship—we acted like a couple but never defined it.

It can also characterize distant or purely formal connections: My nonrelationship with my father lasted until I was thirty.
