Neutral status is an official position of non-involvement in a conflict or dispute.
Countries may declare neutral status during wartime, refusing to ally with either side: Switzerland maintained neutral status throughout both world wars.
The term also applies in legal or administrative contexts where a party is recognized as having no stake in an outcome.
