nature study
Field-based observation
Nature study is an approach to science education emphasizing direct observation of plants, animals, and natural phenomena, typically outdoors.
Popular in elementary schools from the late 19th through mid-20th century, it encouraged children to explore local environments rather than learn from textbooks: The class went on a nature study walk to identify wildflowers.
