nature strip
Sidewalk-adjacent lawn area
A nature strip is the strip of grass between a sidewalk and the street, maintained by adjacent property owners but typically owned by the municipality.
The term is primarily Australian and New Zealand usage; Americans might call it a tree lawn, parkway, or verge.
We planted natives on the nature strip.
