natural monuments
Designated geological features
Natural monuments are geological formations, notable trees, or other distinctive natural features that receive official protection due to their scientific, aesthetic, or cultural significance.
Unlike national parks, which preserve entire ecosystems, natural monuments typically designate specific objects or smaller areas—an ancient redwood, a waterfall, an unusual rock formation.
The towering sea stack was designated a natural monument in 1923.
Many countries maintain registries of such sites to prevent development or damage.
