natural historian
Studies living world
A natural historian studies or writes about natural history—the observation and description of plants, animals, minerals, and other features of the natural world.
The term evokes an earlier era of science when curious amateurs collected specimens, kept detailed journals, and catalogued species: Darwin began as a natural historian aboard the Beagle.
Today it suggests someone who observes nature closely and communicates findings to general audiences, distinct from laboratory scientists.
