national academy
State-sponsored learned society
A national academy is an institution, typically government-sponsored, that promotes excellence in a particular field—usually sciences, arts, or letters.
Members are elected based on distinguished achievement.
Such academies often advise governments on policy: The National Academy of Sciences issued a report on climate change.
Some maintain standards for language or culture.
