muzzle brakes
Barrel-end blast deflectors
Muzzle brakes are devices attached to the end of a firearm barrel that redirect propellant gases to reduce recoil and muzzle rise.
Slots or ports in the brake divert gases sideways or backward, counteracting the gun's rearward kick.
They're common on high-powered rifles and artillery pieces: The muzzle brake made the .300 Win Mag much more manageable.
The tradeoff is increased noise and blast to the sides.
