musical motifs
Repeated melodic fragments
A musical motif is a short melodic, rhythmic, or harmonic phrase that recurs throughout a composition, serving as a building block or unifying element.
Motifs are typically brief—just a few notes—but distinctive enough to be recognized when they reappear, often varied or developed.
In film scores, motifs are frequently associated with particular characters, places, or ideas, as with the ominous two-note shark motif in *Jaws*.
The composer wove the opening motif through all four movements.
