mumblings

Barely audible speech

Mumblings are words spoken indistinctly or too quietly to be understood clearly.

The term often implies that someone is speaking in a way that suggests complaint, confusion, or reluctance to be heard: I couldn't make out his mumblings.

Mumblings may also refer to incoherent or half-formed thoughts expressed aloud: the mumblings of someone talking in their sleep.
