moral obligations
What conscience demands
Moral obligations are duties arising from ethical principles rather than legal requirements or personal preference.
They represent what a person ought to do based on conscience, social norms, or philosophical frameworks: We have a moral obligation to help those in need.
Unlike legal obligations, which carry formal penalties, moral obligations are enforced by guilt, social disapproval, or personal integrity.
The phrase often appears when distinguishing ethical duties from practical considerations: Setting aside the business case, there's a moral obligation to treat workers fairly.
