modern folklore
Today's oral traditions
Modern folklore refers to stories, beliefs, and cultural practices that emerge and spread in contemporary society, often through digital channels rather than traditional oral transmission.
Unlike classical folklore rooted in ancient traditions, modern folklore includes urban legends, internet memes, viral rumors, and collectively constructed narratives that reflect current anxieties and social dynamics.
The Slender Man started as a creepypasta but became genuine modern folklore.
These stories evolve rapidly as they pass through social networks, accumulating variations much as traditional tales did across generations.
