mistranslate

Garble between languages

To mistranslate is to translate incorrectly—rendering words or meaning inaccurately from one language to another.

The error may be minor or may completely distort the original: The interpreter mistranslated "sympathetic" as "pathetic," changing the tone entirely.

Mistranslation can be accidental or, in propaganda contexts, deliberate.
